The
Rodeo:
Calf Roping |
Ever throw a lariat? I tried,
once; it's not as easy as it looks. A tree stump easily avoided my
rope; and it was moving mighty slowly, too. I'm not even going to
think about trying to rope a running calf from a galloping horse.
Well, yah, I guess I can think about it; I think I'd miss! |

Ready, aim, FIRE! A great action shot of the lasso
in mid-air. The cowboy must then wrestle the calf to the ground and
tie its legs together (you can see he's holding the tie in his mouth.) |

Team roping has two riders chasing after the calf; the first rider
predictably ropes the calf's head. |

|
The second rider then has a much more difficult task; he must rope
the calf's hind legs as it kicks them up. I didn't think it was possible,
'til I saw it myself. |

There's more than one way to catch a calf. No lasso handy?
Well, just reach down and grab him! (No, this is a different competition
from the roping; the cowboy isn't just improvising.) |
